Maine (WABI) - Law enforcement agencies in Maine will be on the lookout for distracted drivers during the next five days as part of a statewide campaign.

On average, distracted driving results in more than 3,400 crashes, five hundred injuries, and about 45 deaths each year in Maine, according to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

The bureau wants to remind drivers no text or phone call is worth your life or someone else’s life.

”I think that people forget. They hear that text message come in, and they think, ‘Oh, I can get that real quick.’ And so, what we want people to know is just don’t do that. Don’t take that chance. Use that ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature, or pull over some place. We just really want people to do what they need to do safely,” said Lauren Stewart, Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

A first offense for violating Maine’s distracted driving law is a $50 fine, but subsequent violations are $250.
