Law enforcement opens new shooting range at Southwest Iowa Training Center - KETV Omaha
It has been 16 years in the making: law enforcement in the Council Bluffs area finally have a new, 100-yard shooting range.
Council Bluffs Police Chief Tim Carmody tells KETV the 100-yard range was originally part of the training center's design, but the government just did not have the funds to make it happen.
"Its going to prepare officers for real life situations they're going to deal with out on the street, protecting citizens and themselves," said Chief Carmody.
Council Bluffs Police and the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office unveiled the new 100-yard shooting range on Wednesday.
It is designed for longer range target practice, especially for sharpshooters.
"We've unfortunately had instances where we needed a sniper to perform their job, so to be able to train on a regular basis and not have to take a shot you're not used to taking is pretty important," said Council Bluffs Mayor Matt Walsh.
The Southwest Iowa Training Center hosts 58 Iowa and Nebraska law enforcement agencies every year for training.

The new range cost about $3 million, shared between the city and county. Police say they did not spend any extra tax dollars.
They add the difference this will make is priceless.
"We train and train and train for situations that may occur once in a career. And if we don't, then that officer's not prepared and they're not going to go home to their family," said Chief Carmody.
Law enforcement will start using the new range as soon as Thursday.
