Law enforcement presence stepped up after student had gun at Broughton High Monday morning - WRAL.com

Raleigh, N.C. — Broughton High School in Raleigh was briefly locked down Monday morning after a student was reported to have a firearm on campus.
By the time law enforcement officers located the student, he or she had left the school.
"After a combined investigation conducted by Raleigh police officers, Wake County security staff and school administration, we have confirmed that a student had a weapon on campus for a short period of time before leaving campus," Principal Elena Ashburn wrote in a message to parents.
School leaders said to expect an increased law enforcement presence throughout the day and into Tuesday.
It is the latest in a string of incidents at schools across the state in which students have been caught with weapons. It is a felony in North Carolina "for any person knowingly to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind on educational property."
In one of those incidents – a student found with an unloaded firearm at Cary High last week – police are recommending criminal charges. Simply by bringing a weapon to campus, the student faces up to a year's suspension.
Just last week, Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker called on lawmakers to pass laws that could hold parents responsible when a minor breaks that law and on prosecutors to ask for stricter punishments for violations.
Teachers and educators across the nation have reported a rise in violence ever since students returned to classrooms from pandemic-related shutdowns, according to the news outlet Education Week, which has been tracking school shootings. The organization reports that there have been 31 school shootings this year and 23 since Aug. 1. Through Thursday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools had confiscated 21 guns since the start of the school year.
