Law enforcement suspends water search in Red River in Grand Forks - KVLY

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) -(UPDATE 4:50 p.m.) The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office says they are suspending their search efforts after spending much of Friday and Saturday morning combing the Red River.

This comes after law enforcement received a report that a person may have disappeared while swimming in the frigid waters.

Authorities say its unclear if the person had already exited the water.

They also say there are no active missing persons reports that match the information provided.

Law enforcement officials say the search is being suspended unless new information becomes available, but periodic searches of the river are planned for throughout next week.

(Update 5 p.m. Friday)

According to Sheriff Andy Schneider, Grand Forks and Polk County Sheriff’s Offices, along with Grand Forks and East Grand Forks Fire Departments, continue searching for an individual that may have gone in the Red River at approximately 8 am Friday, north of the Demers Avenue Sorlie Bridge.

“It’s about getting rapid deployment and when we get reports of somebody in the river we’re getting down there and into the water as quickly as we can to help.” said Grand Forks Fire Dept. Fire Chief Gary Lorenz.

Search teams are using sonar-equipped boats and drag lines to search the area. The identity of the individual is not known at this time. Search efforts will resume Saturday morning.

“Even if you are very careful, you could slip into those rivers and in that current. It can catch you very fast. So I think the biggest thing you can do is avoid it at all together,” said Lorenz. “Stay away from those river shores. I know people like to walk pets down in those areas, but just keep them on a leash and stay away so that you’re not subjected to those slippery river banks.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office at 701-780-8280.
