Law Enforcement United members honor local law enforcement officers - WTOV Steubenville
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Police in Steubenville and Jefferson County were honored Tuesday by a group of fellow officers on a long-distance bicycle ride.
A group called Law Enforcement United came to town to pay respects to their fallen officers. But there's a much deeper cause at work.
They are on a ride from Columbus to Washington.
They read the names of officers fallen as far back as the turn of the 20th century in Steubenville. The retired and current officers of Law Enforcement United have a purpose that runs even deeper than memorials -- to help the families of the fallen.
"You leave your home in the morning and your spouse ends up getting a visit from the chaplain and the chief,” Rich Gallo said. “Your life as you knew it the night before is an entirely different life from that moment forward.”
One of the organization’s Law Enforcement United supports is called COPS - Concerns of Police Survivors. They also run an annual summer camp and support the Officer Down Memorial page and the Spirit of Blue Foundation. It's professional and personal.
"I have personally lost two officers in my time of service,” Juan Romero said. “I've lost more, but two I was very close to. My partner that we worked transportation together was killed in 2006. Her anniversary is May 6."
"We all have families, and sometimes they get that call and you just they have to be supported,” Patrolman Jim Marquis, President of Fort Steuben Lodge 1FOP, said.
The local FOP made a contribution to Law Enforcement United.
