PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12)- — Local law enforcement ups patrol this Thanksgiving holiday weekend as they keep watch during one of the most dangerous travel periods of the year.

Along the busiest traffic corridors in Port St. Lucie is heightened enforcement.

This holiday weekend, every officer within Port St. Lucie’s Traffic Unit is on duty, looking to prevent fatal collisions.

"When you make that decision to drive, exceed the speed limit and drive negligently, you could end up hurting yourself or somebody else," said Officer Ian Harris. "It’s not just you that's affected."

The National Safety Council says about 515 people may die on roads across the country this Thanksgiving holiday, the highest estimate since 2007.

The number of air travelers this week is expected to approach or even exceed pre-pandemic levels, and auto club AAA predicts that 48.3 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday period, an increase of nearly 4 million over last year despite sharply higher gasoline prices.

This steep increase in alcohol consumption means more people are likely driving under the influence and more people are injured or killed in car accidents. The high number of traffic fatalities around Thanksgiving is also driven by the fact that more people are on the roads. According to AAA, 49.3 million travelers – the most travelers since 2005 – will hit U.S. roads over the holiday weekend, from Wednesday evening to Sunday evening.

Between today and Sunday, officers from agencies statewide will be focusing enforcement efforts on impaired driving, aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving and other violations that often contribute to highway tragedies, especially during holiday seasons.
