Law enforcement warns of callers impersonating them with real names - KATU
Two weeks ago, KATU told the story of a woman who received a suspicious phone call from a person who claimed to be with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
She said she felt like it was a scam, but the number came up on the caller ID as a Gresham phone number and she thought it might be the officer's cellphone number.
"A lot of these scam artists are using technology that scrambles lines. It might even look like the call is coming from the sheriff’s office. That makes it that much harder to stop these kinds of scams," said Sgt. Brandon White with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.
White is all too familiar with these types of scams, where the caller is trying to either get personal information or money from the victim.
Recently, a potential victim was able to record a caller, claiming to be White.
"They’d grab that piece of truth to help solidify their lie," said White. "It’s scary for all of us, because I don’t want my name to be part of a con or hurt or injure anybody."
White said the best way to prevent becoming a victim is to know the truth.
"The sheriff’s office, local police, government officials do not call you to extract money from you. That’s how you know it’s a scam right off the bat," said White.
