Law firm creates safety fund to give free dashcams to ride-sharing drivers in Toledo area - WNWO NBC 24

TOLEDO, Ohio — Crime numbers against ride-share drivers are on the rise across the nation and here in the Buckeye State.
LegalRideshare LLC is a private law firm that represents drivers and passengers of these ride-shares against moments like these.
A lot of these crimes are becoming copycat crimes that are spreading nationwide.
"Ride-share drivers are being targeted at a rate that exceeds the general public. We're finding that criminals are targeting these gig workers because oftentimes they're sitting ducks," explained Bryant Greening, attorney and co-founder.
Greening's law firm is putting up $25,000 to a dashcam fund that will work to get Ohio drivers cameras for their dashboard for free if they're driving Uber, Lyft or any other service. $5,000 will go to the cameras and $20,000 in reward money for any information leading to the conviction of a rideshare crime.
"We believe that dash cameras are the single most important safety tool that a rideshare driver can have in his or her vehicle. They serve two purposes, one, they're a potential deterent to bad actors, and two, they serve as evidence if and when something does go wrong."
Greening went as far as to say Uber and Lyft have not done enough to keep their drivers safe. He said one of the reasons they started this fund was because the ride-share companies didn't.
"I wish that we didn't have to be the ones to do this. I don't think that it's a private law firm's responsibility to be the ones to make this community safe, but we're glad to step up and do it until the billion dollar companies will."
NBC 24 reached out to Uber and Lyft for a statement on the rising number of crimes among their ride-shares with Uber staff saying:
"Safety is a top priority at Uber and we've pioneered many of the safety features and policies that are implemented across the industry today, including an in-app emergency button. Our work on safety is never done, and we remain committed to investing in features designed with safety in mind."
Lyft's statement said:
"Safety is fundamental to Lyft and we are working closely with law enforcement to help keep driveres safe. We continuously invest in new products and policies to help protect drivers, and are exploring ways to expand the use of our safety features to help prevent these incidents from happening."
