Law & Order column: Antioch man charged with indecent solicitation of child in online police sting - Chicago Tribune
Bedini was exchanging sexual messages online with who he thought was a 14-year-old boy, but in fact it was an Antioch police detective, police said.
When Bedini arrived at a location expecting to meet the boy, he was taken into custody, according to police. He has been charged with indecent solicitation of a child and sexual exploitation of a child.
“Although social media can be a great tool when used appropriately, we cannot ignore the fact that some of these online sites and apps can be a breeding ground for predators who are seeking to take advantage of vulnerable youth,” he said.
You may have seen the recent story about an Ingleside woman charged in a string of thefts from mailboxes around Lake County.
The woman, Kristin Siminak, is accused of being part of a group of people stealing checks from mailboxes and then altering them.
In conjunction with the arrest, the Lake County sheriff’s office passed along some tips to help residents avoid becoming victims of mail and identity theft:
- Pick up mail as soon as possible after it’s delivered to your mailbox.
- Rather than placing mail in a street mailbox for delivery, consider dropping it in a secure postal box.
- Have your mail held at the post office when traveling.
- Consider a mailbox that requires a lock to retrieve your mail.
- Consider signing up for the U.S. Postal Service’s Informed Delivery service, where you can digitally preview mail scheduled to arrive in your mailbox.
The Illinois State Police Department is reminding motorists that most car vs deer accidents happen in the fall, with November as the peak month.
- Use caution, especially during dawn and dusk. Deer frequently travel in groups, so if you see one, slow down as more could be nearby or close behind.
- Do not swerve into oncoming traffic or off the road to avoid hitting a deer. Even though it can be a common instinct, it could cause you to lose control of your vehicle and result in a more serious crash. If possible, slow to a stop and wait for the deer to move along.
- Decreasing your speed may reduce damage to your vehicle if contact is made with the deer.
- Deer can become mesmerized by steady, bright lights and can become frozen in the road, so if you see a reflection of their eyes, slow down, flash your headlights and honk your horn to alert them.
- If you hit a deer, contact the police.
Extra emphasis was placed on late night hours when police are most likely to encounter impaired drivers or motorists driving without their seat belts. In Lake County, the sheriff’s office said it made three arrests for DUI during the campaign, which ran from Oct. 16-Nov. 1.
