“Chung chung!” More than 12 years after we thought its final case was closed, Law & Order is back!
It was announced on Wed., Sept. 28 that the original series that spawned such spinoffs as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (which itself boasts spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime) and Law & Order: Criminal Intent will return for a 21st season. Creator Dick Wolf said about the renewal in a statement, “There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true. This is mine.” Wolf will continue producing the series with Rick Eid as showrunner and writer.
Susan Rovner, chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, added. “Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating. This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere.”
Boasting 456 episodes in its original 20-season run, Law & Order came close to beating Gunsmoke‘s record for longest-running primetime drama before the original series was canceled in May 2010 after contract negotiations fell through before it was renewed. Incidentally, it was Law & Order: SVU that would actually shatter the record with 23 years and counting on air.
Though many details about the reboot remain a mystery (don’t worry, we’ll continue to investigate and report back here!), here’s everything we know about it so far about the 21st season of Law & Order.

Will there be a Law & Order reboot?
Yes! The new Law & Order is on the way, NBC and Wolf Productions have confirmed. It isn’t the first time the series has tried to make a comeback, though: In 2015, a Law & Order miniseries was proposed, but fell through before ever being produced. The reboot news also comes just months after another proposed Law & Order spinoff, Law & Order: For the Defense, was scrapped before production. Here’s hoping this one sticks the landing!
Is Law & Order coming back in 2021?
No release date has yet been announced for the Law & Order reboot. That said, with the end of 2021 just three months away, it’s unlikely that Season 21 will bow before the end of the year. Look for it in 2022, we’re betting.

Who will be in the Law & Order reboot cast?
No casting announcements have yet been made for the Law & Order reboot, but Deadline reports that some “beloved characters” from the original series are expected to return, with Sam Waterston‘s Jack McCoy reportedly a fan favorite to make a comeback. What will the Law & Order reboot be about?
A news release on Wolf Entertainment’s website promises that the 21st season of Law & Order will look a lot like the first 20 seasons. “Season 21 will continue where the show left off in 2010,” it states, “with the classic format that explores two separate, yet equally important groups: ‘the police who investigate crimes and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.'”
Is there a Law & Order Season 21 reboot trailer?
There’s no trailer yet (which makes sense, since filming on the reboot hasn’t started yet), but when news about the reboot officially broke on Sept. 28, the Wolf Entertainment Twitter account shared a 20-second teaser that reads, “Eleven Years Later… The Stories Continue. The Twenty-First Season.”
