Law & Order: SVU character set to cross over with the main show - Digital Spy

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay is set to appear as fan-favourite character captain Olivia Benson in the Law & Order Season 21 finale.

TVLine reports that although it's not a true crossover episode, she will make an appearance in the "emotional finale" which involves the shooting of an off-duty police officer, who also happens to be a friend of Detective Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan).

Showrunner Rick Eid confirmed there would be no more cameos this season, however, he wasn't ruling any out for next season – if it gets greenlit.

"I'm sure next year you'll see some," he said. "I'm excited about next season. We haven't officially been picked up, but I'm hopeful that we will be... I think next year, we'll get an opportunity to dig even deeper into the character stuff, which really excites me."

Hargitay has led the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since its inception in 1999 and is the only original cast member still appearing regularly in the series.

Last year. she and co-star Elliot Stabler teamed up to troll fans who were hoping they'd kiss, with a cheeky behind-the-scenes pretend kiss picture, after a fan posted a "what if" scenario tweet.

The tweet read: "Can y'all imagine if one day @Chris_Meloni and @Mariska posts a picture like this pretending they are kissing with the caption #Rehearsing. It would be the end of us and the end of the internet."

So, Christopher delivered and posted a picture showing the pair looking like they were a second away from a steamy snog, and no doubt much to the fans' delight captioned it, "#rehearsing what @Mariska ?"

Law & Order Season 21 finale will air on May 19 on NBC. Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
