As season 23 hits a midpoint, the SVU department continues to take on hard-hitting topics with fresh perspectives.

Law & Order: SVU has made itself a NBC staple, keeping audience members locked on the show for 23 seasons, steadily pulling in large numbers since 1999. The follows an elite group of detectives who try to seek justice for victims of abuse and sexual assault. The new Law & Order: SVU season 23 episode, “Promising Young Gentlemen,” follows a college’s secret society that preys on female students. The trailer shows the young woman at a table with a group of young men, presumably from the secret society, as well as Benson's colleagues discussing the possibility of rape being treated as a hate crime. Lieutenant Benson argues for the hate crime charge by saying that the young woman was targeted because of her gender.

With the new episode, the question of charging rape as a hate crime emerges, a debate that has often come up in recent years. The episode is sure to bring up the varied reasons and arguments on why rape should be charged as a hate crime and why it might be a different charge than a hate crime. It’s also possible that the episode will be a tie-in to the newest addition to Law & Order spin offs: Law & Order: Hate Crimes. It would make sense for Law & Order: SVU to make nods to the new show, especially since Law & Order: Hate Crimes might go to streaming instead of NBC, due to the strong language of the show. The newest episode of Law & Order: SVU will premiere on March 10 on NBC, with a next day premiere on Peacock.
