Law: Rockies make curious decision with Kris Bryant; Cubs get big boost with Seiya Suzuki - The Athletic

The Rockies’ major-league decisions the past few years have been curious, to put it mildly. They traded Nolan Arenado for a fraction of his worth, even considering the money they cleared by doing so (a contract they had given Arenado of their own free will, by the way). They held on to Trevor Story and Jon Gray through the trade deadline last year, forgoing the chance to get some prospect value in return. And now they’ve signed a very good player, outfielder/third baseman Kris Bryant, to a seven-year contract that might be decent value but makes very little sense for the Rockies as they’re currently constituted.

Bryant won an MVP award in his second season in the majors (2016), but since then he’s been consistently above-average rather than one of the best players in the league. He’s good for a wRC+ in the 120s to low 130s, which puts him among the 50 best hitters in baseball (regardless of position), and he has shown he can especially crush fastballs, while having a bit more trouble with offspeed stuff. Perhaps that’s good news for the Rockies, as those secondary pitches may not move as much, and Bryant will at least get more fastballs or just less offspeed stuff while playing in Denver. He’s played both outfield corners and third base, with some reps in center as well, although the Rockies need more range than he can offer in centerfield.
