Law & Safety Course | News, Sports, Jobs - The Inter-Mountain

ELKINS — As part of the Law and Public Safety course being offered at the Randolph County Technical Center, students interacted with members of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department Thursday to learn about the dangers of drunk driving.

Sgt. Danny Pennington and Deputy Rocky Hebb, who are both Prevention Resource Officers in county schools, talked to Michael Parlock’s RCTC class about the repercussions of drinking and driving.

The two officers brought a pedal car along with them and had the students drive through an obstacle course while wearing a pair of impaired goggles.

The goggles gave the students a glimpse of how it really looks and feels to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking alcohol. The students were also put through a field sobriety test while wearing the impaired goggles.

“We want these kids to see how difficult and dangerous it is when you drink and drive,” said Hebb. “It is something we hope none of them ever do in their entire lifetime.”

Parlock’s Law and Public Safety class at the Vo-Tech Center helps prepare students for employment in the field of corrections and law enforcement, with emphasis on applications and ethical issues in safety leadership.

Hebb spends each school day at Tygarts Valley High School as part of the PRO program. Pennginton, meanwhile, can be found daily at the Elkins Middle School. Their duties aren’t limited to their respective schools, however, as they also visit other schools in the county, including the grade schools, for educational purposes.

The officers’ stop at Randolph County Technical Center on Thursday is just one of several interactive events the officers have planned with students. On March 25 members of the RCSD, including Hebb and Pennington, will play a basketball game against the eighth-grade middle school team at Tygarts Valley High School. The team will also play against Elkins Middle School and Harman at a later date.

Hebb says having events like the basketball games is a good way for police officers and students to get to know each other.

“Our focus is to gain a great relationship with some of the middle school kids who are moving up to high school,” he said. “We want them to get to know some of the other members of the sheriff’s office so in case they ever need them for anything, they will know them a little bit.”

Hebb said that members of the Sheriff’s Department will also take some time before or after the games to talk to the students about making good life choices and staying off of drugs and alcohol.

Hebb said he and Pennington are also currently working on a project with forensic science and criminal justice teachers at Elkins High School, Tygarts Valley and Harman. As part of the project, the officers are giving those instructors at the aforementioned schools a mock crime scene that the students are asked to go in and work on and solve.

“The students actually collect the evidence and try to work the case like they would in real life,” Hebb said. “The students are really working hard on the cases and they really enjoy it.”
