• Burr & Forman LLP has added Catherine “Cat” Kirkland as a partner in the firm’s Mobile office. Kirkland joins the health care practice group, representing a diverse set of health care clients, including hospitals, physicians and health care start-ups in legal, compliance, regulatory and reimbursement-related matters. According to her LinkedIn profile, Kirkland previously was a partner at Starnes Davis Florie LLP and Gjerset and Lorenz LLP. She earned her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
• Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP’s David W. Owen, a partner in the firm’s Birmingham office, has been elected a fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers. The ACCL is a national organization of lawyers who have demonstrated skill, experience and high standards of professional and ethical conduct and who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in construction law. This class has eight attorneys. Owen leads Bradley’s construction practice group and is co-chair of the firm’s energy team. He is a registered professional engineer and represents contractors, subcontractors, engineers and owners in private and government contract matters nationally and internationally. He has significant experience with Mega-Projects, EPC projects, solar facilities, biomass projects, fossil-fueled generation facilities and a variety of other issues connected by construction, energy and engineering. He has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America since 2013 in the area of construction law and was named a BTI Client Service All-Star.
• Maynard Cooper & Gale LLP has added lawyers Luke Porter and Ben Rosen to the corporate areas of service. Porter has joined the San Francisco office as an associate in the corporate, securities and tax practice. Prior to joining Maynard, he worked for a publicly traded software company and in‐house counsel with a Silicon Valley startup. He also spent several years as an associate in the San Francisco office of an international law firm. Porter’s practice focuses on venture capital and emerging companies, including entity formation, venture financing, corporate governance and other corporate law matters. Porter earned a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law. Rosen has joined the same practice as an associate. Prior to joining Maynard, he was in‐house counsel, including serving as corporate counsel for several software companies and their affiliated entities that spanned the globe. He concentrates his practice in the areas of mergers, acquisitions, private equity and other strategic initiatives for business entities. With a background in intellectual property law, Rosen has experience providing legal support for company rebranding, obtaining domestic and international intellectual property protection for new patents and trademarks, filing federal copyright applications, and licensing agreements. Rosen earned a J.D., with a concentration in business law and intellectual property, from Northeastern University School of Law.
• Jones Walker LLP’s Michael D. Waters has published “Governor Fob James of Alabama: Making Headway on Constitutional Rights, 1979-1980. a Legal Adviser's Perspective." The book covers issues that occurred during James’ first two years in office from 1979 to 1980 when Waters served as his legal adviser on James’ staff. The book addresses two major topics: the revision of the Constitution of Alabama and prison reform, among other things. Waters said Alabama continues to face these same two issues today.
