Letter: Enforce laws on the road - The Columbian
King County found that the law for bicycle riders was minimally and disproportionately enforced toward people of color and the homeless, so they’ve decided to “let people be people” and disregard the law of the land (“King County repeals bicycle helmet law, citing equity,” Associated Press, Feb. 19). What?
The law was written to protect those who wouldn’t protect themselves, and to prevent the enormous costs of head trauma recovery the citizens of the county must bear. Seat belt and cellphone use while driving are also not enforced. Chalk another one up for the scofflaws.
Officials will say that policing agencies are spread too thin or don’t have the manpower to “encourage” compliance, so how’s this: Form a posse.
The Vancouver Police Department already supports Neighbors on Watch. How about getting pairs of citizens “armed” with video cameras and, with the time stamps and license plates showing, record and then notify the noncompliant? Much like a red-light camera, the video evidence should be enough to cause a citation to be written, delivered and enforced, and just think of the benefits: more money for police departments and more mindful users of the roads, resulting in safer byways, fewer accidents and less in medical expenses.
