Letter | ‘No one is above the law’ a vital American principle - Santa Cruz Sentinel

The principle “no one is above the law” is deeply rooted in our national psyche – independent of political persuasion. Allowing that belief to be compromised – for any reason – poses grave peril to our nation’s future.

Since the great majority of us are not educated in law, when contemplating the meaning of “no one is above the law,” we are more likely to be thinking, more literally, “no one should be beyond the reach of justice.” Therein lies the source of peril: while the notion of justice is by definition perfect, man-made law is often not.

We the People must not allow ideological or political preference to erode this fundamentally American principle.

— Tom Roberts, Aptos

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
