Letter: Texas abortion law - Concord Monitor

The state of Texas has enacted a law restricting abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy. The authors of the law have crafted terminology exempting it from review by the Supreme Court. It also encourages bounty hunters to take the matter into their hands. This, in and of itself, portends a serious escalation of violence in our nation. The ensuing level of outrage that has resulted seems fully justified to me.

It is appropriate to investigate the motivations of the creators of this monstrous legislation. It is clear that these anti-abortion zealots are positioned politically at the right end of the political spectrum. These activists are, in effect, forcing their religious beliefs onto fellow citizens. The U.S. Supreme Court has chosen to dodge the issue. It appears that the Texas Republican Party has made a commitment to undermine a basic tenet of American democracy. The early founders of this nation had a fervent concern about religious freedom and the separation of church and state.

By forcing a principle espoused almost exclusively by a right-wing component of the Christian community, the leaders of the Texas Republican party have assaulted the very foundation of our nation. It is not just the leaders of the Republican party in Texas that are venturing into efforts that are destructive to fundamental American values. Our NH legislature has passed a law restricting abortion also. Its details are equally alarming. How many NH Republicans would willingly support their leadership on this?
