Letter to the Editor: Thank you to law enforcement - Northern Virginia Daily

Editor:

How many of you have grown up in a big city? If you answered — I did — then you'll remember having neighborhood police officers walking the beat. I grew up in a large city — Baltimore, and I can still remember officer Schultz walking along checking store doors twirling his baton and taking time to talk with the neighbors and the kids. We knew him as officer Schultz and he knew our names. Those were days I will never forget.

Having an officer of the law looking out for everyone, made us all feel safe. The local precinct had a club for boys and girls. They even gave us miniature badges with our membership number on them. The club offered sports and various educational programs. We got to know all of the officers.

Today, whenever I hear someone speak about the police they refer to them as cops. That was a no-no when I was growing up.

They're officers — not cops and should be addressed as such. Even if I know their name — it's still officer Joe or officer Jane.

I see so many people in stores ignoring an officer in the checkout line. Why not show a little courtesy and greet the officer. The same goes on the roadway through town — give a wave. This is showing respect and telling the officer that you appreciate what he does each day protecting each and every one of us. Technically speaking — each time an officer is on duty, he or she is laying their life on the line for you and me.

Our town of Strasburg may not have the luxury of an officer walking the beat but rest assured they are there in time of need.

Thank you Chief and thank you to all of the police officers for keeping our little town a safe place to live and call home.

Ed Tooma, Strasburg
