NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Advocates for Marsy's Law are encouraging Tennesseans to light their porches purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Marsy's Law for Tennessee aims to strengthen the rights of crime victims across the state. The legislation is named after Marsalee "Marsy" Nicholas in California who advocates say was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend back in 1983. Just one week after her death, Marsy's mother and brother walked into a grocery store and were confronted by Marsy's accused murderer after having just visited Marsy's grave. They were unaware the accused had been released on bail.

To honor his sister, Marsy's brother made it his mission to give crime victims and their families a voice. He formed Marsy's Law in 2009.

“One in three women have experienced some form of physical violence by a partner, we all know someone.” said Marsy’s Law for Tennessee Victim Outreach Director Marianne Dunavant. “We hope shining a purple light on porches and businesses across the state will be a conversation starter. Each light is a reminder to victims that they are not alone.”

For the month of October, Tennesseans may participate in the #LightYourPorchPurple campaign by replacing a porch light with a purple light and sharing a photo on social media using the hashtags #LightYourPorchPurple and #MarsysLawforTN.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, 71,263 criminal offenses were flagged as domestic related in Tennessee in 2018. According to their data, females were three times more likely to be victimized than males, accounting for more than 71 percent of all domestic violence victims.

On a national scale, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that more than 10 million adults experience domestic violence every year in the U.S.

Warning signs may include:

  • A jealous, controlling, or possessive partner
  • Unusual behaviors like no longer spending time with friends and family.
  • Unexplained injuries or marks on their bodies
