COLUMBIA, S.C (WPDE) — A Little River man pleaded guilty Wednesday to assaulting law enforcement with a dangerous weapon during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, according to a release from the United States Attorney's Office.

According to court documents, Nicholas Languerand, 26, was among rioters standing near the archway leading from the Lower West Terrace to the interior of the U.S. Capitol.

He was arrested on April 15 and will be sentenced on Jan. 20, 2022. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon.

The release said that the breach disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress that was processing and counting the electoral votes related to the presidential election.

Between 4:50 p.m. and 5 p.m., Languerand threw various objects at capitol and police officers, including an orange traffic barrier and two stick-like objects, while officers were protecting the Lower West Terrace entrance, according to the release.

The release said that based on the size and weight of the objects and the speed and force that he threw them, the items were capable of inflicting serious bodily injury.

"Languerand also took possession of a police riot shield, struck it against the ground, and then held it in front of him as he confronted police," the release said.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

Since the riots on Jan. 6, more than 650 people have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol, including over 190 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, according to the attorney's office.

The investigation remains ongoing.
