Beckstein Fund awards
$200,000 to Mote SEA
The Beckstein Charitable Fund of the Manatee Community Foundation has awarded a $200,000 grant to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium’s Science Education Aquarium (SEA). The fund has provided $250,000 to Mote SEA since 2018.
Mote SEA is planned for 12 acres in Nathan Benderson Park. The site will double the number of residents and visitors within an hour’s drive of Mote’s outreach facility. Its interactive teaching labs will be accessible to all schools in the region, including no-cost opportunities.
"Our community is so very fortunate to have leading Manatee County philanthropists Gene and Anne Beckstein embrace Mote's vision of 'Oceans for All,’” Mote president and CEO Michael Crosby said. “Their leadership gift to this campaign for the Science Education Aquarium is setting the pace to ensure the new facility's educational programs become a reality for all the K-12 school children in Manatee County."

WRC webinar: 'Women
in Law Enforcement'
The Women's Resource Center will present a free webinar, “Women in Law Enforcement: Careers in a Fast-Growing Industry,” on Wednesday from noon-1 p.m. Speakers include Bradenton Police Chief Melanie Bevan and Lt. John Murrell from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
There are lucrative opportunities in the law enforcement field for women in the Sarasota-Manatee region, said Lori Gentile, WRC's director of client services.
"Many positions are available immediately and they offer a great opportunity to build a rewarding career in law enforcement,” Gentile said. “No experience is necessary for many of these jobs. The need to recruit, train and promote more female officers is more vital than ever."

Tidewell hosts financial
abuse info session
The Tidewell Foundation is hosting a webinar on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. on preventing financial abuse as part of its Care Redefined Series.
Thelma Restrepo, senior vice president and global fraud prevention manager at Northern Trust, will review the most common fraud scams that target the elderly, including grandparent scams, romance scams, investment scams, utility scams, and home repair scams.

drive tops expectations
Temple Emanu-El's High Holiday Food Drive raised a record $40,000 as well as 3,900 pounds of donated food for All Faiths Food Bank.
“I am in awe of the generosity of our congregants who have again met the Jewish hallmark of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, by participating,” Temple Emanu-El social action committee chair Susan Rosenbaum said. “I particularly want to thank the [committee] members who worked together during this difficult time of social distancing to make this important event a success.”

Laser-engraved pumpkins
for Halloween at Fab Lab
The Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab is getting festive with a Halloween workshop using the Fab Lab’s high-tech laser engraver.
Families are invited to create a custom design or find a design online and then engrave it on a pumpkin. The hourlong sessions are available on Oct. 23 from 1-7 p.m. at the Fab Lab, 4452 Beneva Road, Sarasota.
