Law enforcement officers from throughout Skagit County took part Monday in the annual Shop with a Hero event at Walmart in Mount Vernon.

Throughout the day, officers teamed up with local kids to spend money on whatever Christmas gifts the kids wanted.

The kids were chosen by their teachers for being good students and classmates throughout the school year.

About 20 schools and dozens of kids participated this year.

Many kids, like Janelle Vega, a third grader at Lucille Umbarger Elementary in Burlington, thought about gifts for family members before gifts for themselves.

Vega picked out toys and art supplies for her cousins and siblings before choosing a fuzzy backpack for herself.

After Christmas shopping, kids had the opportunity to have their gifts wrapped and visit with Santa.
