Local Law Enforcement Offering Trick-or-Treating Event Tuesday Evening - WEVV
Local law enforcement agencies are partnering up to host an event celebrating National Red Ribbon Week.
The fight to end drug abuse in our local communities is taking a national approach this week.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign. It runs from October 23rd to October 31st.
On Tuesday, several agencies are coming together for National Red Ribbon Week to host a safe and free trick-or-treating event outside of Bosse Field.
The prosecutor’s office says this event is more than just a Halloween celebration. They say this year is a record-breaking year for the number of overdose deaths in the Evansville community.
In 2019, 54 people died in Vanderburgh County as a result of a drug overdose. That number rose to 67 in 2020. However that number continues to skyrocket in 2021 at 76.
“That's 76 different families that have been affected this year alone. Getting candy and coming out in costume will be a fun event, but there's also a very serious message with it and that is to prevent them from using drugs and prevent them from possibly becoming one of these overdose deaths in the future,” Vanderburgh County Prosecuting Attorney Nick Hermann says.
In 2020, the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office says they filed over 2,100 felony charges involving drug dealing and/or possession of controlled substances.
The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana, Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, and other local drug enforcement agencies to host the “Drugs Are a Trick, Not a Treat” event.
The agencies say it takes enforcement and prevention to fight this epidemic that they say continues to spread amongst children and teenagers.
“We all know that drugs bring nothing good to a community. It hallows out lives and many times brings death to our loved ones and our neighbors. It's our attempt here tomorrow to get with young people, and their parents and begin to express the message that drugs have nothing to offer,” says Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana John Childress.
The event is free and open to kids and their parents to trick-or-treat and get to know their local officials.
The event kicks off at 5 p.m. Tuesday evening outside Bosse Field at 23 N. Main Street in Evansville.
