DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) - Right now, more and more packages are being delivered as we’re only 11 days away from Christmas.

With this increase in deliveries comes the dreaded porch pirates looking to steal those presents but local law enforcement is trying to help prevent that from happening.

Last year, we saw an increase in deliveries with people being stuck at home and that continues to be an easier option for most people, which is why law enforcement is seeing an increase in thefts from property.

Montgomery County Chief Deputy Daryl Wilson said another reason we see a rise around the holiday’s, more expensive items are sitting by the front door.

“Sometimes you can go around the neighborhood and I'm sure people are at work or whatever and packages are sitting, just waiting at every other door. So it's just more of it, which means that it's more of an opportunity for thieves to be thieves,” Wilson said.

Typically, what they’ll do is drive around to look for packages, park in front of the home or nearby to see if anyone is home, and then make their move.

Chief Deputy Wilson said instead of confronting the thieves, try to take a picture of their license plate number.

We asked him if having a ring doorbell or something similar is truly helping this issue, “Any type of recording helps in the crime because it gives us evidence and a good starting point. So yes, absolutely," Wilson said. "Whether surveillance, Ring doorbell but there's so many out there but yes, not only that, but just the signage, saying that this property is protected or this property is under close surveillance or something like that is also a deterrent.”

Chief Deputy Wilson said a good neighborhood watch program and having that posted in your neighborhood is also a deterrent.

He said if you see something, say something, and definitely call your local law enforcement.

Wilson said the key thing in preventing this is neighbors looking out for neighbors.
