The holiday shopping season has begun. While members of the community prepare to shower family members with presents, it is important to remember your safety when holiday shopping.

"Many agencies, many jurisdictions have additional patrols out in those areas, the retail areas, the malls, the shopping centers, the malls, the box stores. But really it is on you, it's important that you be aware of your surroundings no matter where you're at, either in the store or outside the store," said Matt Luettke, captain of the Lucas County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Division.

During the holiday shopping season, law enforcement sees an increased rate of retail and car theft.

While being aware of your surroundings is paramount, law enforcement also recommends not leaving gifts in the car, always locking your car and not posting your holiday shopping plans online.

"Typically it's the crime of opportunity, right? It's the car left unlocked, it's the valuables in plain sight that somebody sees as they're walking past, that's the biggest thing we notice," described Lt. Chris Sargent of the Perrysburg Police Division. "Just try and think about those things when you're leaving your car. Don't have that in plain sight."

But if something were to still happen this holiday season, whether that be in the stores or even having an online order stolen, both law enforcement divisions emphasized they are here to help.

"We obviously want you to have a good time out in the public. That's what we're there for, to try to make your experiences out in the public as safe as possible, but part of it is your responsibility to make yourself less of a victim," Luettke said.

Sargent added, "Pay attention to your surroundings and don't hesitate to call 911 if you need to."

As Black Friday and other big sales quickly approach, it is important to remember these steps so you and your family can enjoy a safe holiday season.
