BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The Bowling Green – Warren County Drug Task Force will partner with other law enforcement for the Prescription Take Back Initiative with locations being set up Oct 23.

Three locations will be set up in Bowling Green for people to drop off their expired, unused and unwanted prescription medication including the Bowling Green Police Department at 911 Kentucky Street, at Kentucky State Police’s Post 3 at 3119 Nashville Road, and on Warren County Household Hazardous Waste Day event at 999 Lauren Avery Drive.

The BGPD and KSP locations will operate from 10a.m. to 2p.m. and the Hazardous Waste Day location will operate from 8a.m. to 1p.m.

Now in its twelfth year, DEA and its partners have collected a total of more than 11 million pounds, or 6,000 tons, of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications through its Take Back Day events.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, according to the Warren County Drug Task Force, adding that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day also addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue.

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

This service is free and anonymous as well, according to the Warren County Drug Task Force.
