Local law enforcement preparing for "Blackout Wednesday" - newschannel20.com

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is bringing in extra deputies this holiday season, many of which will be out Wednesday night for an unofficial holiday.

Blackout Wednesday, also known as “Drinksgiving,” is known as one of the biggest drinking nights of the year.

Lots of people are coming back to town for Thanksgiving and meeting up with old friends for a beverage or two.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office has been keeping an eye on the trend for a few years now.

Officials say it wasn’t as popular last year because of the pandemic, which means this year could be even more dangerous.

The department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation to bring in more deputies to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We’ll be looking for restraint violations, certainly distracted driving, DUIs, virtually every traffic violation that could endanger our citizens,” said Sheriff Jack Campbell.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office is also urging people to be careful.

They recommend calling for a ride, having a designated driver, and reporting any potential drunk drivers you see.

Local police departments and the Illinois State Police are stepping up patrols during the holiday season, so prepare to see more law enforcement as you head out.

Fatal traffic crashes have increased in Illinois and nationwide compared to last year.

As of November 12, there have been more than a thousand fatal crashes in Illinois.
