Local law enforcement sponsoring several community events - Cheboygan Daily Tribune

Several upcoming events are being sponsored by the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department and local law enforcement, all teaming up for the fourth annual Cheboygan County Sheriff Department’s Coats for Kids fundraiser.

Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont said two of his deputies, Sgt. Earl Manuel and Sgt. Dean Tebo, both of whom initiated the Coats for Kids program, will be teaming up with the rest of the department and other local law enforcement to collect winter clothing for the children of Cheboygan County. The members of the department are spearheading the drive to accept clothing and monetary donations.

“We are thrilled that everyone in the department once again stepped up for such a great cause,” said Clarmont.

The focus is to work with the parents and schools to ensure all kids in the county have what they need. This is put together by the Cheboygan County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, in conjunction with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 122.

Manuel said donations sought are of new and gently used clothing for boys and girls — as well as adult male and female — including warm winter coats, snow pants, winter boots, gloves and hats.

“Last year, even with COVID-19, the outpouring from county residents was incredible, and law enforcement was able to supply around 300 kids with needed winter clothes,” said Manuel.

Tebo said there will again be a charity hockey game between local law enforcement and the Straits Area Men’s Hockey league. The game will be at the Ralph G. Cantile Cheboygan Ice Rink at 4 p.m. on Dec. 4.

“Admission to the game can either be a monetary gift or winter clothes donation collected at the time of the game,” said Tebo.

Any checks written to support the Coats for Kids Program should be made out to FOP Lodge 122, Care of Coats for Kids.

Tebo said that except for last year due to COVID-19, the hockey games have had a great turnout.

“It's always fun and worthwhile to get the community together to support local causes,” said Tebo.

Manuel added there are drop boxes for winter clothes for the program located at Citizens National Bank Main in Cheboygan and the Indian River branch, Straits Area Federal Credit Union, Fernelius Toyota, Bishop GMC-Cadillac, Calcite Credit Union in Cheboygan, Wheeler Motors, Wilson River Edge Restaurant in Indian River and the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Darren LaChapelle is heading up the sheriff department’s No Shave November again this year with donations also going to Coats for Kids. During this event, Clarmont waives the traditional grooming standards to which he holds his deputies, allowing them to grow out their facial hair.

“The female corrections staff is also participating with dress down days” said Clarmont.

The deputies will be competing with each other to see who can grow the best facial hair, in hopes of winning the Traveling Beard award in December.

Deputy Dan Stacks is also once again organizing the Riggsville Redneck Christmas Parade, to take place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 18.

“As with years past we will once again be collecting food donations for St. Thomas Food Pantry and in addition we will be collecting winter clothes for kids,” said Stacks.

There will be a float in the parade to collect the canned goods and a Cheboygan County patrol car in the Sacred Heart Church parking lot on Polish Line Road to collect coats or monetary donations. There will also be a vehicle at the end of the parade to collect clothes for those that cannot get to the church to drop off the items.

“The deputies have reached out and organized through the school districts for them to receive the kids clothing. We all just want to ensure that every child that needs winter clothes gets them,” said Clarmont. “This definitely could not have come together without all the deputies and corrections officers stepping up along with other police officers, the men’s hockey league, local businesses and the citizens with their donations.”

“I can’t say enough about our law enforcement and the citizens in Cheboygan County, it just seems when there is a need everyone comes together” said Clarmont.

If anyone has any questions about the Coats for Kids program Clarmont encourages them to contact the sheriff's department at (231) 627-3155, extension 888.
