SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WKEF) - We’re seeing an uptick of car break-ins throughout the Miami Valley recently, many police departments now warning community members to keep an eye out.

The Springboro Police Department is one of those warning people to remain vigilant.

It starts out as simple valuable items that are left out insight and then if keys are left inside the car it can turn into something as big as thieves taking the car as well.

Throughout its investigations, the police department determined it’s a group of people coming up from the Cincinnati area and sweeping their way through the counties.

Detective Drew Pyles said there’s not one specific area being hit, they’re just taking advantage of the opportunity.

“It's crimes of opportunity that these people are taking care of so they're coming into the neighborhoods they're looking for unlocked cars, open garage doors, and that sort of thing," Pyles said. "So anywhere that people are leaving themselves susceptible to that and they're taking advantage of it.”

He said they're looking for unlocked cars and no matter where you live it’s important to take precautions.

Detective Pyles said this is mostly happening throughout the early afternoon into the night.

“The best thing people can do at this point is just be vigilant obviously they're the ones that are living in these neighborhoods they know when something's out of place or doesn't seem right," Pyles said. "But, to not become a victim of these crimes, it's as simple as making sure your car's locked, don't leave valuables in it, don't leave your garage doors open if you have to, and just be aware that these crimes are something that are happening in the middle of the night.”

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook, also warning people about a rise in thefts.

The post includes “Ten tips to reduce auto thefts and break-ins”.

Police are also encouraging people not to confront these thieves but to immediately call your local police department and give them a description of those involved.
