Hurricane’s mayor said no threat could be found Tuesday after a 911 caller reported that someone had a gun at Hurricane High School, and he thanked law enforcement for its quick and heavy response at the scene.
Mayor Scott Edwards said Putnam dispatchers received information from a caller about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday that someone was hiding upstairs in the high school with a gun.
Edwards said there was a quick, massive response to the school by Hurricane police, Putnam County deputies, State Police troopers and various other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
“I thank each one of these men and women for putting their lives on the line to protect our children because they did not know what they were going into as they entered the school,” Edwards said. “Thankfully, after obtaining more information, it was found that there was no actual threat.”
The mayor said someone had heard from a child who had heard from friends that there may be a person with a weapon, but no actual threat could be located. The school was checked thoroughly and cleared.
