LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Louisville has put into place a new law to target people who randomly shoot guns into the air in the city in another effort to reduce gun violence.

The measure was signed into law on Thursday by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, who was joined by a family that had been through the tragedy of gun violence.

“This is not a game,” Krista Gwynn said. “You can’t put a quarter in and restart. Some children think that this is part of their modern warfare game. This is not a game.”

Gwynn described her family’s experience with gun violence as tragic. In 2019, her son was murdered in a drive-by shooting. Her daughter was shot alongside her friend, who was killed, last year.

Needless to say, Gwynn is in favor of the new law.

“I think it’ll help benefit the gun violence going on and help the police get a handle on who’s shooting what,” she said.

The legislation prohibits firing a gun within 300 feet of a road or alley, as well as shooting toward a structure within 300 feet that might be occupied. The rule, according to Mayor Greg Fischer, strikes a balance between the needs of the city with reality in the rural part of the county.

“There’s no conflict with the Second Amendment here, this is just common sense law mirrored in several other cities,” Fischer said.

“Ceasing random gun fire in densely populated areas is paramount,” LMPD Chief Erika Shields agreed.

Shields said the new law will give officers an ability to arrest shooters for this kind of behavior. She said the city’s surveillance technology will also help.

“It’s possible for the shot spotter to trigger and pull the cameras to that area,” said Shields.

The ordinance carries a $500 fine and 90 day jail term for people who are prosecuted under the law.
