Madison County state's attorney appeals Illinois' new subcircuit law ruling - The State Journal-Register
The Madison County state's attorney appealed a Sangamon County judge's ruling last month tossing out a lawsuit challenging the new judicial subcircuit law in Illinois.
The law affects Sangamon County judgeships, though there aren't any contested races until 2024.
The bill, which was signed into law by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Jan. 7, divided Madison County into three subcircuits and removed countywide elections of judges. Madison County has elections for judges this fall.
The lasplit the 7th Judicial Circuit — which covers the counties of Sangamon, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Morgan and Scott — into seven subcircuits.

Sangamon County will have two subcircuits, one covering most of Springfield and the other covering the rest of the county. Each of the five other counties will be an individual subcircuit.
State's Attorney Thomas Haine filed a lawsuit on behalf of the citizens of Madison County challenging the constitutionality of the new law on Jan. 21. Following a hearing on Jan. 24 in Springfield, Circuit Judge Ryan Cadagin issued a temporary restraining order on the legislation, which halted the implementation of the subcircuits.
The state appealed the halt and following the lifting of the TRO by the appellate court on the state’s appeal, Cadagin dismissed the case on Feb. 24.
Haine has called the law "unjust, unconstitutional and riddled with problems."
