A majority of respondents in a new Politico and Morning Consult poll say they support reform to the law former President Trump tried to use to get former Vice President Mike Pence to reject Electoral College votes for President Biden.

Voters were asked if they supported reform to the Electoral Count Act of 1887 that does not clarify if the vice president’s role during the certification of presidential election results is ceremonial or if the person has the power to reject state-certified electoral votes.

The question asks if it should be clarified that the vice president would not be allowed to reject electoral votes and would limit the person to a ceremonial role, which former vice presidents have taken in the past.

Fifty-five percent of voters in the poll said the law should be changed to make the vice president’s role in the certification of presidential election results strictly ceremonial, while only 20 percent oppose the change. Twenty-five percent of respondents had no opinion on the matter.

The question comes after Trump attempted to persuade Pence to use his power as vice president to reject electoral votes from the 2020 election so Biden would not be certified as the winner.

Pence refused, a move that irreparably harmed his relationship with Trump and his supporters. During the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, Pence was the target of angry Trump supporters who could be heard calling for his death and for the vice president to be hanged.
