FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- A 56-year-old man was arrested after a five-hour standoff in Fort Walton Beach early Friday morning.

Aaron K. Nano is charged with:

  • two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm
  • two counts of Possession or Use of a Weapon during a crime
  • one count of Resisting an Officer Without Violence

The incident happened at #2 Elm Ave. in Fort Walton Beach

Fort Walton Beach Police responded to the residence after two victims reported they had been shot at by Nano during an argument.

"One of the victims is a family member of the suspect who resides in the residence, and one is an acquaintance who lives nearby," police say in a release. "During the argument and physical disturbance, the suspect produced a handgun and fired at both victims who narrowly escaped injury."

Police says officers tried to get Nano to surrender, but he hid in a boat on the property and refused to give up.

Authorities from several different agencies were called to the scene to help resolve the incident peacefully.

"For more than five hours, the suspect refused to surrender, told negotiators he was armed, and actively attempted to avoid arrest," the release states. "Members of the Special Response Team located him hiding in a workshop on the property wearing a gas mask. He was taken into custody without further incident."

These agencies assisted in the incident:

  • the Okaloosa County Multi-Jurisdictional Special Response Team
  • the Northwest Florida State College Police Department
  • the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiations Unit
