A Mountain View man has been arrested after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase, with speeds reaching 120 miles per hour. Thirty-five-year-old Jim W. Dayberry is facing several charges following the pursuit early on the morning of Jan. 24.
According to the probable cause statement, a Stone County deputy observed a vehicle traveling at 66 miles per hour in a 55 miles-per-hour zone on State Highway 14 at Saint James. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled with speeds reaching 100 miles per hour. The deputy was able to get close enough to recognize the driver as Mayberry and knew he was wanted in Independence County.
The pursuit continued onto Cove Road, which is graveled, at 60 miles per hour. Dayberry then turned onto State Highway 5, driving on both sides of the road. As the pursuit continued on Highway 5, speeds reached over 120 miles per hour.
Dayberry then turned onto Misenheimer Road, which is also graveled. When he got to the intersection of Luber Road, another deputy deployed spike strips deflating the tires on the left side of Mayberry’s vehicle.
Mayberry continued two more miles on the flat tires, before his vehicle struck a tree, and he was taken into custody.
Mayberry is charged with a felony count of fleeing and a reckless driving misdemeanor. He is also charged as a habitual offender, having been convicted of more than four felonies. He is also held on a parole violation and a failure to appear warrant out of Independence County.
