Man charged with killing his 84-year-old mother-in-law in N.J. home - NJ.com

A man was charged Tuesday with killing his 84-year-old mother-in-law at a home in Nutley, authorities said.

The Nutley Police Department received a 911 call at 8:21 p.m. from a man saying he killed his mother-in-law, and when police arrived at the Prospect Street home they found Barbara Ann Bezzone, of Nutley, lying on the floor with “severe injuries,” according to a joint statement from Nutley police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bezzone was pronounced dead at the scene just over 20 minutes later, authorities said.

The woman’s son-in-law, James Pica, 58, was arrested and charged with her murder, the statement said. His motive for allegedly killing her and the manner in which he allegedly did so were unclear Wednesday.

The incident remained under investigation Wednesday and anyone with information was asked to contact the prosecutor’s office’s tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
