Man fatally shoots himself in front of law enforcement outside Mat-Su hospital, troopers say - Anchorage Daily News

A man shot and killed himself outside Mat-Su Regional Medical Center near Wasilla early Thursday in front of law enforcement officers, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers were called to the hospital for a trespassing report around 6 a.m., they wrote in a statement. The responding troopers took one man into custody and escorted him out to a patrol vehicle, the statement said.

“When the troopers arrived at their cars with the trespasser, a male ... approached them on foot, produced a handgun and shot himself in the head,” troopers wrote.

The man did not make any threats to the troopers, said public information officer Tim DeSpain.

“The events transpired quickly and there was no standoff with the suicidal subject and troopers,” he said.

Troopers and hospital staff rendered first aid to the man, but he died on scene, according to the statement.

Neither the troopers nor the man they were arresting were injured.
