Man found dead at Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center - WXII12 Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center.

According to the sheriff's office, Jack Jeffery Murphy-Renzi, 19, was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning.

Deputies say the Winston-Salem man had been in the center since March 4 for driving while impaired.

The sheriff's office says there is no clear cause of death and an investigation to determine what happened is underway.

The director of the Forsyth County Public Health Department and the chief jail inspector for the NC Department of Health and Human Services have been notified, which is standard procedure. The sheriff's office also asked the State Bureau of Investigation to perform an independent investigation.

In a statement, Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr. said in part, "any loss of life is a loss to our community. We extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family.”
