Man found guilty of killing daughter-in law after he says she disrespected him - Bakersfield Now

Bakersfield, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A Kern County jury found a man guilty of killing his daughter-in-law this week.

They found Jagjit Singh guilty of first-degree murder on Wednesday along with the following enhancements: that the crime was committed with premeditation and deliberation as well that the crime involved Singh’s personal use of a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.

The next day the jury additionally found three circumstances in aggravation applied to the case, including that the crime targeted a particularly vulnerable victim.

The prosecution said officers from the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a home on Monache Meadows Drive on August 26, 2019, at approximately eleven in the morning,

Upon arrival, officers located Sumandeep Kooner, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, deceased inside the residence.

Further investigation revealed that Sumandeep had been shot once in the back of the neck and two more times in the front of the neck.

Amongst the injuries caused by the shots was the severing of Sumandeep’s spinal cord.

Jagjit Singh who was Sumandeep’s father-in-law was identified as the shooter.

He claimed to have shot Sumandeep because she was disrespectful during an argument.

Sentencing is set for July 14 in Department 5 of the Kern County Superior Court before the Honorable John Lua.

Singh faces punishment of up to 50 years to life for the murder.
