Man suspected of lighting the fuse in a law enforcement center arson makes first court appearance - INFORUM

WAHPETON, N.D. — Newly released court documents describe the surveillance video officers used to see what led to the fire at the Richland County Law Enforcement Center, and who they say is responsible.

In the documents, officers said Adam Prochnow carried a backpack into the foyer of the law enforcement center on Tuesday, March 1. They say he is seen on surveillance video setting it down and pulled out a cylindrical device.

They say he lit a fuse on the cylinder and ran out, starting a fire that lead to heavy smoke damage.

Investigators had previously said they think the device was meant to cause a lot more damage.

They say Prochnow is seen on surveillance video getting into a vehicle — then later seen in Fairmount, North Dakota, where he lives. The suspect was covering their face during the suspected arson, though officers are connecting the crime to Prochnow with his, "body and some other features" they say are consistent with him.

Prochnow was arrested by Red River Valley SWAT officers Thursday afternoon after an hours-long standoff.

Digging into Prochnow's criminal record, WDAY News also found a dismissed felony case from June 2021, where police say Prochnow came out of his home with a loaded rifle after police were called for disorderly conduct. At the time, he made references to, "suicide by cop." They stunned him, but he later got up and hit a cop in the head with his hand. Prochnow was stunned again and arrested.

Prochnow had his first appearance in court Friday morning for the arson case.
