Organizers of Marcy's Law of Tennessee are using October to shine a light on domestic violence and victims' rights.

They're literally doing that through a light and say you can easily do it too.

“Just that simple little thing can just bring awareness to something that is greater than people realize," said Victims Outreach Director Marianne Dunavant.

Marcy's Law of Tennessee is encouraging everyone to promote domestic violence awareness through the 'Light Your Porch Purple' campaign.

“If you’re a victim of domestic violence and see that porch is purple, it’s just a reminder, a small reminder that there’s people out there that want to help you and comfort you and want you to know you’re not alone," said Dunavant.

She said this is especially important this year after a peak of reports in 2020.

“People, when they’re financially struggling, their nerves are on edge, sometimes there is substance abuse or whatever is going on," said Dunavant.

She said reports are down this year but does not think actual domestic violence numbers have gone down.

“Some people said the numbers went up and then in child abuse they said the numbers went down and we say that’s because reporting went down," said Dunavant.

Dunavant hopes this 'Light Your Porch Purple' campaign encourages more people to educate themselves on this and emboldens victims to come forward.

“There are places to go. There are so many different communities that use shelters," said Dunavant. "It’s just a matter of knowing where they are and knowing who to call.”

Dunavant encourages everyone to light their porch purple as a way to show support for victims across the country.

“Domestic violence sadly doesn’t go away and it doesn’t discriminate, it affects every household," said Dunavant.

Dunavant said she wants to increase awareness of domestic violence as the organization will be presenting Marcy's Law and arguing in courts for victims' rights at the start of 2022.
