The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve James Mathews as the township law director, replacing longtime official Charlie Hall who resigned late Monday night.

Officials announced Mathews as their selection following a more than hour-long executive session to discuss the position.

Prior to picking Mathews for the post, new Trustees Matt Miller and Lisa Nelligan were sworn into office. The duo, who join Ralph DeChiara Jr. on the board, were victors in the fall general election.

Nelligan was listed on the November ballot as Lisa Dyer. She married husband, Tom, prior to the end of 2021.

Mathews is an attorney with North Canton-based firm Baker and Dublikar and a Lexington Township trustee. He also serves as law director for Lawrence and Tuscarawas townships in western Stark County.

Nelligan to serves as Perry board president

Prior to the start of Tuesday's regular meeting, the board held its annual reorganization meeting.

During the session, Nelligan was tapped to serve as board president for the year, and Miller is vice president.

In other business Tuesday, trustees approved Perry's 2022 operations budget, which totals approximately $20.1 million. The budget funds services such as police, fire, parks and streets.

The board also voted to renew the Fire Department's dispatching contract with the CenCom Center in Nimishillen Township. Cost to Perry is $36 per dispatching call, the same rate from 2021.

The motion passed by a 2-1 vote. DeChiara was the lone “no” vote, saying he would like the Regional Emergency Dispatch (RED) Center to serve as the department's dispatching service.
