Mayor Bonaccorso Addresses Clark BOE, Commends School and Law Enforcement Officials in Wake of ALJ Lockdown - TAPinto.net

CLARK, NJ – At the start of the March 14 Clark Board of Education meeting, Mayor Sal Bonaccorso, joined by members of the Union County Prosecutor's Office and Clark Police Department, took to the podium to discuss the security incident that occurred at Arthur L. Johnson High School earlier this month.

On March 4, ALJ was forced into a lockdown mid-morning after a student was found in possession of a handgun and the mayor, who was in his office at the time, stated he was 'very impressed' with how the situation was handled. He noted that some 60 law enforcement officials were on the scene to ensure that everything ran smoothing and the building was secure and everyone was safe.

"My 26 years in government have taught me one thing and that is to rely and trust your professionals. They are always on the dime," said Bonaccorso, adding, "Like in any operation, there is always a little room for improvement here and there. We all agree that no one is going to hit 100-percent but this was probably as close to as I possibly think it could be."

The mayor also commended the students for how they handled themselves and the superintendent, building administrators, security personnel, and staff for 'taking hold of the situation' until law enforcement arrived on scene. He also stated that township leaders, law enforcement, and school officials met last week to discuss the necessary improvements that should be made moving forward.

"We talked about procedures, what can we do better, how to be quicker. We kicked around some ideas because there is always room to improve public safety," Bonaccorso said.

"Thank you, Mayor Bonaccorso and the law enforcement team, not only for being here this evening for us, but for your strong support of our ALJ High School throughout this process," said Superintendent Ed Grande. "Special thanks to our staff and our students on the day of the incident and their subsequent behavior. We are very glad the day ended with everyone being safe [and] we are using [this incident] to reflect upon and put things into place that we need to improve."
