McMaster signs 'HBCU Day' bill into law on Tuesday - wpde.com
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — A bill that looks to honor historically Black colleges and universities has been signed into law by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
On Tuesday, the governor signed H.4576, which will establish the recognition of “Historically Black Colleges and Universities Day” in The Palmetto State.
South Carolina Representative Deon Tedder (D-Charleston) led the effort to get the bill passed.
“HBCUs are essential to our place in Black History,” Rep. Tedder said. “These colleges and universities educate our best and brightest students and have an overwhelmingly positive impact on our state. While this will be celebrated for years to come as a day in their honor, this is also about equal representation, inclusion and diversity. As a graduate of an HBCU, it is important to me that we give these colleges and universities the recognition they deserve!”
The day will be recognized on the third Tuesday in February of each year.
According to a press release, South Carolina's eight HBCUs generate $463 million for the state and provide jobs to nearly 5,000 South Carolinians.
