Mississippi Black Women's Roundtable calling for equal pay law - WAPT Jackson

The Mississippi Black Women's Roundtable has called for an equal pay law for the state.

Mississippi is the only state without an equal pay law and has one of the highest gender wage gaps.

Currently, Senate Bill 2451 and House Bill 770 are aimed at creating an equal pay law for Mississippi, but advocates said those bills aren't doing enough to make a change.

"Neither of the bills are close to accomplishing the goals for equal pay for equal work. At best, these bills are really equal pay bills in name only," said Samone Ijoma, who works at the Justice at National Women's Law Center.

"They're actually weaker than federal law and would do more harm than good than what workers already have under that basic federal law," said Jessica Stender, who is with the Senior Counsel for Workplace Justice & Public Policy, Equal Rights Advocates.

The group is calling for lawmakers to use language from the failed Senate bill 2452 to be used in making their amendments to the bills still in session.

Mississippi Black Women's Roundtable is also asking constituents to call senators and demand amendments before Thursday's deadline to make a decision on the two bills.
