Moot Court Team makes it to semifinals of national law school tax challenge - University of Oregon School of Law

Andrii Onysko 2L and Trevor Rowland 3L competed in the prestigious 2022 American Bar Association Law School Tax Challenge (LSTC) moot court competition. The team reached the semifinals where they competed against five other best teams in the country.

This highly competitive national competition involves two-person teams of students to solve a complex business problem that may arise in everyday tax practice. The duo was coached by Oregon Law professor Roberta Mann and UO Associate General Counsel Craig Ashford. This competition is a hands-on learning experience for law students to highlight their knowledge in a real-world setting and gain valuable exposure within the tax law community.

“This competition helped me get very practical insight into complex tax matters faced by individuals and businesses.” Andrii Onysko said. “I’ve learned how to navigate a hypothetical client through a myriad of tax rules. These skills are very helpful for students interested in transactional practice.”

In the first phase of the LSTC competition, students draft a memorandum to the senior partner and a letter to their client to explain how they would resolve the matter. In the second phase, the top six written submissions are selected to advance to the semifinals where teams must present their findings to nationally renowned tax practitioners, government officials, and tax court judges.

This is the second year in a row that Oregon Law students have participated in the semifinal round, and the third time that the Oregon Law team coached by Professor Roberta Mann reaches the semifinal rounds. Last year, Steven Cooper and Tyler Eddington advanced to the final round and took third place.
