More than 350 new laws go into effect Monday in Oklahoma - KOCO Oklahoma City
OKLAHOMA CITY —
More than 350 new laws will go into effect Monday in Oklahoma.
One law going into effect Monday is Ida's Law, which specifically focuses on solving cases involving missing and murdered Indigenous persons. The law is named after 29-year-old Ida Beard, a citizen of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes who went missing in 2015 and was never found.
Ida's Law directs state agents to coordinate with other state offices to create a database to provide funds and guidance to victims' families.
"When I started to really dig into this, it's staggering. The ratio is missing native Indigenous women compared to other ethnicities," state Sen. Paul Rosino said.
Also going into effect Monday is a law requiring local law enforcement to comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to hold an inmate for an extra 48 hours. While some have called the law's constitutionality into question, the requests give ICE agents more time to take an inmate into federal custody if they don't believe the suspect is a U.S. citizen.
A string of laws stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic also will go into place, including one that will require hospitals to allow patients to have at least one visitor, even if Oklahoma is under a state emergency. Many hospitals prohibited visitors as a safety precaution during the height of the pandemic.
In criminal justice reform, the Sarah Stitt Act requires the Oklahoma Department of Corrections to help inmates get a state ID or driver's license when they are released from prison. Officials will gather documents and information before their release.
Lawmakers have capped the copay of a 30-day supply of insulin to $30. Roughly 500,000 Oklahomans with diabetes rely on the drug.
Also, the Transparency in Health Care Prices Act aims to make health care costs more transparent. Health providers will be required to publicize the prices of their 20 most common services.
