The Moses Lake School District is beginning the process of renaming a school and two school mascots to comply with a state law prohibiting the use of Native American names.
The law passed by the 2021 state Legislature bans the use of Native American symbols and images for schools, mascots, logos and team names.
Changes must be made for the Moses Lake High School Chiefs, the Frontier Middle School Warriors and Chief Moses Middle School.
After meeting with the school district, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation asked the district to cease using the names and mascots.
In an email to parents this week, the school district said the decision to make the changes was not taken lightly and they did appreciate the tribes’ willingness to discuss the issue.
“We respect and appreciate their willingness to meet and listen. They have since approved a Resolution stating that all school districts within the exterior boundary of the Colville Reservation and adjacent to the Reservation cease from using Native American names, symbols, or images as public mascots, logos, or team names,” the district said.
Now, the school district is accepting applications until Friday at 3:30 p.m. from people interested in serving on three committees to come up with new names and mascots.
Residents can apply to serve on a committee by filling out a form on the district’s website.
But participation is not limited to people on those committees, the district said. Everyone who is interested will be given a chance to offer their thoughts.
The committee will narrow down the choices for new names before they go to the school board for a final vote.
