MOUNDSVILLE — Family, friends and peers gathered in Moundsville’s city building to congratulate police chief Tom Mitchell on his long career in law enforcement, which was recognized with a citation from the W.Va. House of Delegates.

Del. Charlie Reynolds, R-Marshall, was on hand to present the award Tuesday afternoon, saying he’d struck up a friendship with Mitchell after joining the Legislature, and that he wanted to recognize the chief’s career of service.

Since 1984, when Mitchell was hired by the Glen Dale Police Department, Mitchell has been employed with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, the Wheeling Police Department, and ultimately, beginning in 2011, the Moundsville Police Department.

“It’s been an honor to serve,” Mitchell said. “… I’ve met a lot of great people, and I like to think I’ve helped some people along the way. I’m glad that I got to be a policeman.”

Mitchell said he was surprised by the award, but that it was easy to do good work when he worked alongside good staff.

“It’s not why we do what we do, but it’s nice that people acknowledge that we’re trying. … It’s nice that people come out to show their support. … It’s a challenging career, a good career, I’m glad that I’ve done it. Some people have asked, ‘Would you like to have done something else?’ and, well, an astronaut, maybe,” he joked.

“I feel I’ve done well, and I like to hope I’ve had a positive impact on the community.”
